Sunbeams danced in the office as a beautiful summer morning began. The phone rang and life changed. Her voice was different, a seriousness in the undertone of a normally cheerful greeting.
It had been a routine visit. No symptoms, no concerns, a regular mammogram until a day later when she received the call to come back into the clinic for additional x-rays. She returned to the women’s center alone; not wanting to “burden” loved ones. She recalled how her heart was racing as she felt the fear rise up within her.
She stood at the machine, exposed, cold and feeling venerable as the additional pictures were taken. Praying, hoping that her strong inner knowing was wrong. The click of the x-rays continued until finally the technician sent her to redress. She waited. The nurse called her name.
Numb, her legs moved her forward to the doctor’s office. In the stark room, she was met with compassionate eyes within the solemn face of the doctor. She was told a biopsy was required; a lump had been discovered in her right breast. Her heartbeat quickened. “When” she asked, “Today” the doctor had replied.
The procedure was completed within the afternoon. Still, she kept silent, holding her fear from family and friends. A few days later the results from the lab arrived. Another visit to the clinic was required. Praying for wisdom and guidance, she finally reached out to the ones that loved her and allowed their love to buoy her.
With the support of family and friends she explored her options blending complimentary practices with traditional medicine. Her final decision was to have a mastectomy. Within days she was in the hospital. During the surgery a second lump was discovered and she underwent a double mastectomy.
She had known before the doctor and was prepared when the news was delivered upon her awakening in recovery. She was grateful for life, still, there was grief. Within her heart a deep sorrow for the loss of her breasts and the sense of losing her femininity. It was not an easy time. Anger surged, fear rose, hope and trust prevailed.
Weeks pass, she now undergoes chemotherapy, deals with medications that leave her fatigued, without an appetite, yet, she finds a deep spiritual awakening along with a new appreciation for humor. She is healing. Prayers from friends and family continue to sustain her spirits during this arduous time of physical reconstruction and spiritual development. Her connection to the Divine is strong and true.
Scheduling time for rest and reflection was important; meditation is always vital part of her life, now a daily practice. She is listening to her mind, body and spirit. She carries a small rose quartz heart to remind her to live in love, act with love and that the Divine is always present. Gratitude fills her heart and she lives with gusto and passion.
She is a brave, beautiful woman with an indomitable spirit and commitment to life. She is my friend and source of inspiration. She willingly shares her story to ensure that other women take care of themselves. One of the most important lessons that she has learned is to nurture her body and spirit without guilt. She knows health is precious; that boundaries are important to maintain her well-being. Perhaps, you know this woman too.
