Life today can be stressful and the heart longs for simpler times; recalling childhood moments of comfort and care to refresh the soul. Last week I found myself with deadlines and distractions. Still, rooted in gratitude I stopped to breathe, reprioritize, and finish my work then began to plan for the weekend.
It was a quiet Saturday morning. Walking home from the farmer’s market I found myself thinking about the changes in my life. After unpacking the bags of fresh ingredients I was guided to take out my grandmother’s recipe box to rediscover her recipe for bread. Without hesitation I found my mother’s baking pans and began preparing to surprise friends arriving dinner.
As I checked the pantry for ingredients once again I felt a deep pang of loss. Missing the friends and family recently passed, their presence whispered, urging me forward to create a gift of love. The subtlety of their energy ever present, I began to mix the fresh fragrant ingredients. Filling bowls with dough, I waited for the balls of flour, rosemary and yeast to rise.
Looking around the well-used kitchen, I started a simple meditation of tasks, cleaning and preparing the pans. Reflecting in the quiet solitude, on the need to love and be loved. I marveled that Humanity shares that single desire; the need to love and be loved. Life is filled with transformation and change. It is an inevitable truth of this existence. How we respond defines our lives.
Comfort is found in the familiar; with my hands moving in memories shared with loved ones I began to gently work the dough. Flour sprinkled on the counter testimony to a work of love in process. With every movement of my hands I renewed the belief that life is guided by the Divine. Each person, experience and situation provides a unique ingredient but it is always our recipe to alter and improve.
As I continued my tasks, the scent of fresh baked bread filled the house and my heart lifted. The brown crusty loaves, fresh from the oven now waited, cooling on the counter. Guests arriving, I thought we all knead a little love every day!
