Love is in the air as the calendar has turned to Cupid’s month. Valentine’s Day the holiday dedicated to romance; celebrated with roses, chocolate and champagne is fast approaching. Whether just embarking on the journey of young love or content in the joys of a long-lasting relationship Valentine Day marks a special celebration and honors the essence of all love. This happy energy overflows and from eight to eighty everyone enjoys the display of sweet remembrances.
What is your first Valentine’s Day memory? Mine returns me to my childhood as I witnessed the love between my parents. I vividly recall the way my Dad always brought Mom a box of chocolate dipped cherries and the smiles that ensued. Even today, years after they both have passed, whenever I see a box of those sweet treats childhood memories flood my heart and once again love is shared.
The Three Faces of Love
Love appears throughout life in many ways; the unconditional love of parent and child; the supportive love between friends and the passion of lovers. The Greeks describe the three types of love as Eros, erotic love; Philos love based on friendship between two people and finally Agape or unconditional love. Love in these variations reflects the essence of the physical, mental and spiritual being on the path of self-discovery and true love.
Which love will you be commemorating this February 14th? Will it be delighting in the in a romantic sunset? Making heart-shaped cookies with a child or delivering flowers to a loved one. Perhaps, you are feeling a bit out of sorts alone seemingly without a Valentine and feeling a little blue. Acknowledge the feelings within and return to a state of gratitude.
Step out of yourself and into the world to be of service. In sharing from the heart you’ll renew the profound grace of unconditional love. Divine love is felt in the heart stirring acts of compassion without expectation of return. This February 14th be a secret Valentine to an unsuspecting someone. Surprise a neighbor with a bouquet or child with a treat. Light the flame of love through kindness, compassion and action.
Alter of Love
Valentine’s Day provides the perfect opportunity to share with the universe your desire for love. With clear intention create an alter dedicated to love. Set your sacred space for prayer and contemplation to be used during meditative practice and serve as a reminder that loves in its purest sense is ever present.
Each alter is unique as the person creating it. Make it a joyful practice. Layer the sacred space with color, texture and scent. Place upon your alter photos of those you love or representations of the love you are co-creating.
Be as creative as a child; let go and watch the beauty emerge. Consider incorporating the shamanic practice of representing the four elements, earth, air, water and fire! Adding, candles, beautiful flowers in hues of pink, red and white with a pleasing scent along with chimes or a fountain offer a touch of nature indoors.
Crystals in natural form or gently tumbled stones offer a unique energetic and pleasing aesthetic addition to the celebration. If you are focused on enhancing relationships create a love or harmony crystal grid (see photo) to help focus your intentions. Each grid is a sparkling combination of gemstones placed in sacred shapes to add their energies to your intention.
The harmony grid is a beautiful combination of tumbled amethyst and rose quartz placed in the placed in the shape of a heart. Symbolically representing the bliss found in divine love and the grace of embracing harmony in all areas of life.
While the relationship or love grid is a combination of clear and rose quartz crystals placed in the form of the infinity symbol to represent the gifts of male and female energies merging into a single loving relationship.
