Self-Love and Skin

One of the things that I love about KORA Organics is that Miranda has always recognized that there is so much more to healthy, beautiful skin than just using the right product. Of course, that is fundamental to good skin health – but there is more to it than that, and she knows that as well as I do.

My skin became troubled in my early twenties and I struggled with that for about a decade. The journey I went on in my quest for beautiful skin was one of healing a number of different things in my life, including my diet, my stress levels, my sleep deprivation, and most importantly, my tendency to think poorly of myself and to beat myself up in my own head. What I have found is true for me (and I know it may not be completely universal, but I think there are a lot of women who would identify with this) is that my skin really reflects my level of self-love.

What do I mean by that? Well, the way I think of self-love is this: imagine how you would ideally care for your own beloved child. How would you speak to her? What sorts of food would you give to her? How would you respond to her when she felt badly about something in her life?

I’m sure that your answers are probably similar to mine, which is that I would do everything in my power to give that child the best nutrition, the most regular and supportive schedule, and the most understanding and sympathetic heart I possibly could. I would show up as my best self as often as possible. I would be patient, I would be kind, I would be forgiving and understanding. I would speak to that child in sweet tones and comfort her when she needed it, letting her know that everything will be all right no matter how bad things seem right now.

I have discovered that this is what self-love is – talking to yourself, and treating yourself, as you would treat your own beloved child. And interestingly, what I find is that self-love is not self-indulgence, but rather a healthy mix of self-discipline and kindness. It includes the self-discipline to eat foods that are packed with nutrients and that work for your metabolism, to get the proper amount of sleep, and to set aside the temptation to stress or worry. It also means including yourself in your budget the way you include your child’s needs in your budget (for me that means regular bodywork and facials!) And I think most importantly of all, it includes the kindness to speak to yourself with supportive sweetness, positivity, great empathy and optimism.

In other words, self-love is a daily practice. The more I worked on it, the more I realized that it involved reorganizing my entire life and the way I cared for myself and my body. What is interesting is that the more I practiced this form of self-love, the better my skin began to look. It took a few months but I can still remember the day that I washed my face and my skin felt smooth and soft on my fingertips, no blemishes or bumps or sensitive areas, and how amazing that was. And simultaneously, I could feel the difference in how I felt on the inside, too.

So let me leave you with this thought: if you were your own beloved daughter or son, how would you treat yourself differently than you do now? And how can you begin to make that change for yourself today? It’s not just for your skin’s sake, of course – it’s for whole of who you are, your most beautiful self.
